ETS has announced that they are offering a free 6-week course titled “TOEFL Test Preparation: The Insider’s Guide” to help students improve their scores and advance their academic English language proficiency. In addition, students can upgrade by paying a small fee so that they can receive a certificate for completing the course. The upgrade also includes a free copy of “The Official Guide to the TOEFL Test eBook.” Generally speaking, the course includes materials for 2-4 hours of weekly study for about 6 weeks.

Created by the experts who have designed, administered, and scored the TOEFL test, the course aims to help learners improve their skill level. For instance, the course helps students understand how to get their highest TOEFL scores possible. Students enrolled in the course will be guided through the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections of the exam and will see test questions that have been used on earlier versions of the test; thus, enrollees can anticipate what kinds of questions they will encounter when taking the actual TOEFL exam.

To encourage interaction, ETS designed the course with videos, sample test questions with explanations, short quizzes to test learners’ mastery of the materials presented, and even discussion boards at which learners can post questions. During the speaking and writing sections of the course, ETS mentors will randomly select some of the responses and provide evaluation and feedback.

Since students will have access to actual test questions from retired tests, they will be able to get some insider tips on how to get the highest score possible on the exam. In short, ETS explains that there are several benefits to taking this course:

Improvement in English language proficiency

More effective navigation of the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections of the TOEFL test

Beneficial TOEFL Preparation Tips and Strategies

A thorough understanding of how the TOEFL exam is scored

Instruction on how to use TOEFL test scores for jobs, study, visas, and scholarships

Useful time management strategies during the TOEFL test

Additional resources available for the TOEFL exam

TOEFL exam registration information

From what I can tell, at least nine instructors, some of whom are language, host, or moderator instructors, are available during the course to teach the different lessons and to monitor and respond to the comments being made at the discussion boards.

I feel that this course is a great supplement to my Online TOEFL Course “The 7-Step System to Pass the TOEFL iBT,” which is why I am writing about it at my web site. For example, my course helps students improve their academic English language proficiency, including the opportunity to to post pronunciation, speaking, and writing practice tests and get feedback from qualified pronunciation, speaking, and writing specialists, whereas ETS’ course helps students understand the structure and format of the actual TOEFL test, so they know exactly what to expect when completing the exam.
