Solomon has been using his Online TOEFL Course for 4 months now, and finally he has figured out how to use The Voxopop Discussion Group for “The 7-Step System to Pass the TOEFL iBT.”

At first, Solomon had not downloaded Javascript, a required plug in needed in order for him to use his browser to make recordings at the Voxopop Discussion Group. Once he realized he needed to download it, he did it straight away. However, Voxopop still did not allow him to make recordings, at least not with his Internet Explorer browser. After consulting Online with his TOEFL iBT mentor, Solomon tried Mozilla Firefox browser, and he was able to successfully record an independent speaking response using that browser. Go figure!

However, his recording was not very clear; in fact, TOEFL iBT speaking mentor Michael Buckhoff told him that his recording was not clear enough for him to evaluate and score.

“You should probably try a new microphone,” Michael suggested, “to see if that results in a better recording.”

Therefore, Solomon borrowed a friend’s high quality microphone and used that to re-record his first TOEFL independent speaking practice test, this time making a crystal clear recording. The only problem was that he could not borrow his friend’s microphone for very long because his friend used it as the lead singer in his band. Furthermore, if he bought the same microphone in the store, it would cost him more than $400. Solomon did not want to spend that kind of money.

Thus, yet again, Solomon e-mailed his TOEFL mentor Michael Buckhoff for advice.

“You do not need to spend that kind of money,” Michael asserted, “to get a high quality microphone. The microphone I use to talk to you and my other Online students was purchased at Walmart.”

Solomon was surprised to learn that Michael’s microphone only cost $38, and it seemed to work just fine. Further, Walmart was conveniently located about two kilometers from his house, so it was only a hop, skip, and jump away. Consequently, the same day, Solomon drove over to Walmart, purchased the microphone that Michael recommended, and posted his third recording at Michael’s Voxopop Discussion Group for “The 7-Step System to Pass the TOEFL iBT.”

Thankfully, Michael was able to listen to, evaluate, and score the independent speaking task. And, at the conclusion of his comments, Michael recommended that he study TOEFL Speaking Lesson 7, which would help him learn how to more coherently organize his ideas.
