Ivonne joins an Online TOEFL Course to improve her listening and reading proficiencies.

Ivonne from Mexico had low listening and reading scores on the TOEFL iBT. Having wanted to improve these low scores, Ivonne joined Michael’s effective Online TOEFL Course: “The 7 Step System to Pass the TOEFL iBT,” to improve her listening and reading inaccuracies and improve her overall English proficiency. Ivonne’s first comments to Michael are listed below with minor changes.

“Hello Michael,

My name is Ivonne from México; currently I took the TOEFL twice.
The first time on March 11th , 2013 I got:
Reading: 19
Listening: 18
Speaking: 22
Writing: 18
Total: 77
The second time I took the test on April 22nd , 2013 I got:
Reading: 15
Listening: 18
Speaking: 23
Writing: 27
Total: 83
I’m really worry about my score because I need to obtain at least 88 with no less of a score of 21 in Listening and Writing, 22 in Reading, and 23 in Speaking to be able to obtain my unconditional admission to my PhD program. Can you give me some feedback to improve my skills in listening and reading to increase my TOEFL score? I am planning to take the exam again on July 1st.

Ivonne”

Having read Ivonne’s comment, Michael recommended that Ivonne work lessons, practice tests, and exercises within his comprehensive listening and reading sections in order for her to improve her listening and reading inaccuracies and to improve her overall English proficiency.

When working out Michael’s listening lessons, practice tests, and exercises in Michael’s listening section, Ivonne and students’ learned to catch the main idea and important details of campus-related and academic listening passages; by learning how to take notes and practicing how to take notes as they complete 40 + effective listening practice tests. Because of this, Ivonne had learned to be effective in writing and giving oral summaries about different lectures. Moreover within Michael’s listening section, Ivonne had additional listening lesson’s that taught her additional tips and tricks like: inferencing, idioms, negative expressions, getting the main idea, and understanding transitions. Because of this, Ivonne had built excellent listening skills within a two month time.

When working out Michael’s reading lessons, practice tests, and exercises in Michael’s reading section, Ivonne and students’ learned effective reading habits such as: discerning main ideas and details, how to understand vocabulary from context, understand the organization of reading passages including transitions, and having the ability to make inferences with many academic reading lessons; which also familiarized Ivonne with TOEFL iBT question types she and students’ will see during the TOEFL iBT exam, such as: vocabulary, pronoun referent, paraphrase, insert a sentence, details, negative detail, implied detail, infer rhetorical purpose, summary chart, and schematic table questions. Because of this, Ivonne had engaged in critical thinking that better prepared her not only for the reading section of the TOEFL iBT, but also for the integrated speaking and writing sections of the TOEFL.

In the end, Ivonne had reported back with an all new TOEFL iBT score of 95 on July 7th, 2013 with: reading-22, listening-22, speaking-24, and writing-27. Having improved her reading score by 7 points and her listening score by 4 points; with meeting her TOEFL goals! Ivonne now is able to receive admission to her unconditional PhD program.
