TOEFL Writing Practice Thesis Template 1: independent clause + colon + three support points

Definitely, changing jobs frequently has several advantages: more experience, a lucrative salary, and frequent promotional opportunities.

In this thesis statement, I use an independent clause “changing jobs frequently has several advantages,” a colon which is used to introduce the three noun phrases, and the three items as support points: “more experience, a lucrative salary, and frequent promotional opportunities.” Using the colon in this simple sentence shows iBT human raters that you understand advanced punctuation.

TOEFL Writing Practice Thesis Template 2: adverb clause + independent clause + adverb clause

Although some prefer to change jobs a lot, I prefer working for a company for a long period of time because I will have better job stability, more in-depth friendships, and more chances for promotions.

This thesis statement shows some syntactic variety in that I am using an unexpected result adverb clause “although some prefer to change jobs a lot,” an independent clause which restates the writing prompt “I prefer working for a company for a long period of time,” and a cause-effect averb clause “because I will have better job stability, more in-depth friendships, and more chances for promotions.”

TOEFL Writing Practice Thesis Template 3 :two separate sentences

If I have to choose between changing jobs frequently or staying at one job for a long time, I prefer to work at many different jobs at least in the first few years of my career. Changing jobs more frequently will help me to get more experience, to travel around more, and to improve my job satisfaction.

This thesis statement consists of two separate sentences: the first sentence is a complex sentence and the second one is a simple sentence. The first sentence restates the writing prompt by using a conditional adverb clause “if I have to choose between changing jobs frequently or staying at one job for a long time” and an independent clause which states the preference “I prefer to work at many different jobs at least in the first few years of my career.” The second sentence states three reasons in three infinitive phrases: “to get more experience,” to travel around more, and to improve my job satisfaction.”

 

TOEFL Writing Practice Thesis Template 4: the compound sentence

Staying at one job helps me to develop good relationships with my co-workers, to learn new skills related to my job, and to provide a stable environment for my family, so I definitely prefer to stay at one job for a long period of time.

This thesis statement uses a compound sentence with two independent clauses connected with the coordinating conjunction “so.” In the first sentence, I state the reasons “staying one job helps me to develop good relationships with my co-workers, to learn new skills related to my job, and to provide a stable environment for my family,” and in the second sentence, I make my preference “I definitely prefer to stay at one job for a long period of time.”

TOEFL Writing Practice Thesis Template 5: time adverb clause + independent clause + adjective clause + adverb clause

After I finish college and start my career in accounting, I am a worker who will change jobs frequently in the beginning so that I will see varying management styles, have differing job roles, and learn a variety of tax auditing techniques.

In this thesis statement, I use a time adverb clause “after I finish college and start my career in accounting,” an independent clause “I am a worker,” an adjective clause “who will change jobs frequently in the beginning,” and an adverb clause “so that I will see varying management styles, have differing job roles, and learn a variety of tax auditing techniques.” This 41 word sentence will definitely get the attention of the TOEFL iBT human raters.
