Hello sir,

Hii, I will be applying to US universities for PHD for admission in fall 2013. I need to get at least 100 in order to be eligible for teaching apprenticeship. I am trying to memorize Barron master word list( which contains 3500 words). I do read lots of novels (paulo Coehlo, Sidney Sheldon etc.), English newspapers. But, as somebody mentioned, it is difficult to speak like a native speaker. Although I don’t face any difficulties in speaking English, I am stumped by the 45 secs speaking section.
Can you suggest some methods to get a good score in speaking section? English is the language of instruction in my university. But, because of my Hindi medium schooling, my command of English is not as good as what is expected of an average student of my univ. As I am an engineering major, I do stammer a lot when it comes to delivering a discourse on general topics ( that are not related to science or engineering). Do you have a list of probable topics for TOEFL speaking section?

My intended university requires 80, but I really want to raise my score up to 90 or around 100. I bought a book online and daily practice by myself at home, but it doesn’t seem really work since all of my skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking) are still way too weak. I really need your help. Do you have any advises or solutions for this? And how does the course work? Yes, there a few things that you can do to maximize your PBT listening, grammar, and reading scores. But I can not cover all those things in this message. In fact, it would take me a couple of hours to explain to you what those tips are. Hi Mr.Buckoff it’s Zu from Uzbekistan replying to your email answer. I liked the ideas you have shared with me, and blatantly they could work out. But let me tell you my current situation.
I read a lot of books, I spend about 1/2 or sometimes 3 hours to read some of my books, it’s because I like reading a lot. However the problem is not about reading or vocabulary, I’m failing mostly to choose the right answers by thinking logically. I know exactly where am I failing and I know what question screwing me up but I don’t know how to increase this part.
By the way, I have passed my third TOEFL about 2 weeks ago and already got the answer and it was 64 as I mentioned. I’m doing fine on my speaking, my last one was 23. Listening 16, Writing 15, and Reading is 10. Seems I should improve both other sections. Unfortunately, I registered for my fourth right after getting my result and the time limited for 1 and half month (I’m in panic). According to your answer, I should practice at least 3/4 months. Now I don’t have enough time to make my preparation in succession. And by the way what do you think, do I have to prepare all sections at the same day or each sections in different days?!! I’ll be one of your students and use your resources until the next TOEFL.

To keep from getting overwhelmed, I have a general rule which is as follows:
You can take one speaking and writing practice test per day, each time getting audio and written feedback from me so you can make a few adjustments, review some recommended lessons, and then complete another practice test. On the other hand, since my vocabulary, listening, grammar, and reading quizzes and practice tests are computer scored, there is NO limit on how many you can take in a day since I do not have to grade them.
So, you will be allowed to complete all 20 writing practice tests, and I will give you written feedback on all of them. However, it usually takes 1-2 days for me to evaluate your writing and speaking practice tests that you submit. For these reasons, it will be difficult for you to compete all 20 writing practice tests during this time frame.

My name is Sam and I am 15 years of age. I toke my TOEFL test during my IGCSE exam ,therefore I was not able to revise properly for it. I received my first score and I’m completely unsatisfied with it(66). I toke 17 in reading, 18 in listening, 13 in speaking and 18 in writing.This score demotivated me and was a complete mental boost before my exams. I’m extremely disappointed with the score and I would be glad if I take a score of 90 or above in my next test. I honestly was very nervous during the test especially during the speaking task. I would really appreciate if you could TEACH me how I could actually pass TOEFL exam with a score of 84 minimum. I’m a former nurse who graduated from a foreign nursing school in Baku, Azerbaijan. I’ve been leaving in US since 1998. I’m currently about to graduate from a Pre-med program in Moorhead, Minnesota. I have earned all A’s in all my English college courses.
I recently had my nursing diploma evaluated and I was allowed to take an ENCLEX-RN exam to practice nursing in US. Unfortunately, I have to prove that I speak English and have to get minimum of 84 on TOEFL iBT exam.
So, my question is: how in the world I could possible pass this exam when examination room does not fit for such “EVENT”? I took TOEFL exam twice and both times a failed just by couple of points. The atmosphere during the exam is absolutely unacceptable. I never had to experience such unpleasant moments during my school experience in my local college. Both times when I took this exam I pay $ 170 registration fee and I think I deserve to have at least semi-pleasant and quite atmosphere which is suitable for any exam.
Not once I have had an exam in my college where students were talking loud to the professors or just simply talking out loud which was causing a huge disturbance and discomfort to others. I simply do not understand if TOEFL is set up in a way to fail people purposely or just nobody really cares how many people’s life are being left behind the doors. It is understandable that money for the exam is taken immediately when one signs up for the exam but where is the proper, suitable exam atmosphere?
Dear Michael I understand that fixing this problem is not in your power and I’m not asking you to either. I’m just at crises right now and not sure if it is ever going to be possible to pass TOEFL at Prometric exam center. I’m not alone just as many of my friends are straggling with the same problem.

I am totally agree with you.
I have had a similar situation with an IELTS in Toronto, Canada.
I have had a chance to see a total disaster during the exams from their examinants two times.
I have tried to pass the IELTS twice, but my effort and the scores were the same.
My aim was to get on IELTS overall score 7, but I got 5.5.
Everything depends on an examinee, but significant role play there the examinants.
Many an educational institutions offer English courses(TOEFL,IELTS,ect.)here.
From my experience 95% of them have method to “brainwash” your English knowledge.
This is a total money making business.
Unfortunately the sistem in North America is set up to make you fail, or put you down right away.
They don’t need smart educated people here to make the world better, peaceful and nice.
They just want to keep all immigrants below a middle class and do not even give them a chance to be satisfy who they are.

I hope you didn’t give up on getting your desired score!!! I totally understand how frustrating it could get when you study for a test and the results are still lower than you are aiming for. I wish you to be a bit more patient and keep trying.
There is nothing else that will make you happier but the score you need when you finally reach that point!!!
Just think of mountain climbers when they reach the top of the mountains. Try to picture how they feel and imagine yourself in their position. The flow of an adrenaline through their bodies and the satisfaction of getting to the top!!!

I have taken the TOEFL several times and I can’t reach the required score for the reading and listening sections. I got 20 for reading and I need 23 and 21/22 for listening and I need 25. Since the TOEFL does not show you your mistakes and just give you the scores I find myself having trouble finding the mistakes that don”t let me reach the desired score. And one more question. When you say read for 45 mins every day you mean without taking a break?

I do not think that speaking section is my problem since I have talked with native speakers many times and I think that I can fully express my ideas when I talk to them. However, the report says that I have difficulty in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. I believe that this happens because I do not usually use the mic to speak. Last time I recorded my speaking task and it was terrible. Do you think that I can improve my score in 1 month????

I got 69 from TOEFL 3 months ago and I need 80 until 6th of July. I had to register because I have conditional acceptance from really important university for me. Actually, I know what is my problem but I’m doing it continuously. For listening section, I always give wrong answers on “Interference, Speaker’s implication and Rhetorical Function” questions. For writing section,I always get confuse about major and minor ideas in a paragraph like writing a major then continue to it with unrelated minor. I mean, my connections are weak in a paragraph. And for speaking, I got 18. How can I improve my speaking score?

There is not a two week program anywhere on this earth that will move your TOEFL score from 69 to 80. It will be a 2-3 month battle that you and I must fight. Of course, I can not say exactly how many hours you should spend each day since each student is different. However, based on your goal of improving your score from 70 to 90, and, since you need to score 26 and 24 on the speaking and writing sections, you will most likely need to use my Online TOEFL Course for 3 months. Studying three hours a day will help you to complete all sections of my course except the vocabulary section. You may need an extra month for that section of my Online TOEFL Course. However, if you already have a strong base of academic and basic vocabulary, you may not need to spend that much time in the vocabulary section of my course.
The bottom line is this: You can proceed through the TOEFL lessons in my course as fast or as slow as you like, and, during that time, you will have unlimited access to all lessons and practice tests.

First of all, according to the Pay Pal Web Site at https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/, your country is allowed to send money worldwide to other countries although I think there may be some limitations. You will find out what those limitations are when you create your Pay Pal account. Keep me informed throughout the process, and I will work out something that works for you.
Second of all, how long you should take this course before exam day depends on 1) what your current English proficiency is and 2) how high of a TOEFL score you want to get. Since most students are at varying levels of English proficiency and also have different TOEFL goals, I can not easily answer this question. Still, let’s consider a typical student who joins my Online TOEFL Course.
Case in point, suppose you have a current TOEFL score of 86 with scores of 22, 21, 22, 21 in the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections of the exam. Moreover, let’s suppose you wanted to score higher than 100. Based on this situation, the student would need to begin preparing 3-4 months before the actual exam in order to reach this goal.
In addition, your motivation, your attitude, and how frequently you practice on a daily basis can have an impact on either shortening or lengthening the 3-4 month window of learning that you will need.

Not to your surprise, I am writing about your TOEFL IBT courses. Well, let me briefly introduce myself. I work as a research assistant in division of English language teaching. Badly need to get a high score in TOEFL (at least above 105 and above 110 would be perfect) to get my PHd degree in the USA as I will be applying this fall. Improving your TOEFL iBT score from 54 to 71 is no small task, and, even though you are studying TOEFL books, you are still not making the progress that you seek, right? I do not know your entire language background or history, but it sounds like you might be suffering from TOEFLitis. In fact, you may be putting the cart before the horse.
First of all, what does it mean to suffer from TOEFLitis? TOEFLitis, a term I coined a few years back, refers to a language learner who becomes obsessed with the TOEFL exam, often at the point of neglecting to achieve significant progress in second language acquisition. Instead of talking to native speakers on a regular basis, these learners almost exclusively learn their English from test preparation books. They may not read magazines, newspapers, or books, and they seldom take time to listen to news broadcasts and music in English. Learners suffering from TOEFLitis are too busy to watch scientific, history and other forms of documentaries on television. Focusing too much on test preparation and not enough time on authentic language acquisition, these learners hit a language wall. They wonder why they can not make progress.
Second of all, what does it mean to put the cart before the horse? It refers to focusing on TOEFL iBT test-taking strategies without having first acquired the basic vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking proficiency needed in order to use the language at the most basic level. Learners who put the cart before the horse often have wide disparities among their language skill areas. For example, maybe they can read proficiently but are unable to carry on the most basic conversation with a native speaker.
Third of all, Sara, the way you will need to beat the TOEFL to reach your goals is to put down your TOEFL books for a while and focus on the basics. Now I am not criticizing the Longman book you referred to in your comment. Heck I use the very same book at California State University, San Bernardino. But there is a time and place for everything, Your 490+ TOEFL score indicates that you still have some genuine language problems to solve. The real question is this, “Are you willing to solve these problems?”
To conclude, I recommend that you use my Online TOEFL Course for three months: the first month focusing on studying my vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar parts; the second month concentrating on the listening and reading sections; and the third month making an honest effort on improving your writing and speaking proficiencies. 7. Clearer, smoother, and more organized speaking
And after having achieved these objectives, I have a sneaky suspicion that you will also have improved your TOEFL score as well. And guess what? It will be a lot higher than 71!

I watched your video on wwww.youtube.com for many students about improve toefl score. You mentioned that test taker should read 45minutes every day. I believe that this is very important for us to improve reading ability. However, could you give us some details for how to read a book. I have some unknown vocabulary in every page, should I skip these vocabularies as long as I can understand the main idea? Or should I look for the dictionary? Some of these words are out of the TOEFL words, should I still need to remember these vocabularies?
By the way, I want to know some policy of your service. How many speaking audio could we record which you would give us the score? And the writing section as well. I heard one of your worker named Nathan said only one audio can be scored every day? Is that correct?

I remember that I prepared a video answering some of your TOEFL questions about my Online TOEFL Course and particularly that you were interested in making improvements in your reading proficiency.

I suggest two things to help you in your TOEFL progress: that you use my Online TOEFL Course no more than 3 hours a day and that you also take time each day reading magazines, newspapers, and books; listening to news radio and music; and spending time speaking English to native speakers. You want to avoid TOEFL burnout, and you want to keep your mind fresh, which is why I make these two suggestions.

By the time you complete my Pronunciation Pre-test, you will want to score higher than 5.1/7.0. A score of 3.8/7.0 means that you will have pronunciation difficulties when completing TOEFL speaking tasks, and the TOEFL iBT human raters are going to score you lower because of that. There is not a lot you can do in four days to make a difference in your score. However, go to http://www.TOEFL.org and review the “Inside the TOEFL” videos as they relate to the speaking and writing portions of the exam.

hey michael this is diego from guatemala, see im having trouble on the toefl ibt especially on the reading and listening part, and i got a low score (12-14/30) on both. and i got a 69 on my toefl score, and also i need a 71 to be admitted to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. hey Michael how are ya? see on the reading and listening questions, how can i determine which is the correct answer of the questions? how can i know which of the 4 answer choices makes sense with the given information from the passages and listening lectures and conversations? because i don’t have any trouble reading, listening, speaking or writing in English, i’ve been practicing English since i was 5, but i do get stuck on the reading and listening questions in some way like main idea, inferring, essential information,chart questions, specific paragraph or part of lecture questions and the other types of questions, because u know the 4 answer choices to the questions are quite similar in some way, and also i get stuck like half of all the listening questions, u know what i mean?
also my top reading speed is about 230 wpm but i do get stuck on the questions, eventhough i do have large vocabulary though. besides i cant read at least 300 wpm, or else i cant understand what im reading. the fastest speed reading that i have is about 230 or so i quite get the main idea. My normal reading speed is maybe about 200-220 wpm, which is quite normal.
i also bought a toefl ibt book guide, but when i began doing the reading and listening parts of the practice tests, i got a grade around 50%, and i dont know what it went wrong? would you help me in some way other than your online toefl ibt prep course? What do you recommend me to do?

thank you very much for your comments , however in second month i will study reading just 4 times actually in the three months and so the the listening just 4 times and so the speaking and writing just 4 times whiten 3 months. Hi Michael, so I took the exam on the 19th of October- Reading 23 (got better, previous test I got 21), Listening 22 (the same as last time), Writing 22 (last time I had 24- my independent writing is 4.0-5.0, but integrated writing what bothers me 2.5-3.0), and speaking 28 (last time it was 29). I NEED 100 and up, and I keep getting 95 (96 last time). I don’t have much time, as the deadline for one of the universities that I am applying is January 1st, but I also study for my dental boards, that is exactly why I thought just to hurry up with my English test and concentrate on the Dental exam (which is in February, 2013). Could you please let me know what do you think would be the best strategy in my case? As I said I need 100 and up. Prompt answer would be much appreciated 🙂

Thanks for your response Michael. I actually took a month of your course, I was concentrating on the reading, and I did get better in it (2 points, not bad at all). Thank you for that! And I know your course works! The only thing is I would like to know, in your opinion, if I study 1 hour a day, do u think I can reach my goal by Dec 15? 3 months ago,I got a toelf ibt test with 78 points (24 reading, 16 listening, 20 writing, 18 speaking). I have practiced for reading and listening hard so far, and it might be over 22 if I retake, but the speaking and writing is my concern.

hey michael, im still having trouble on the reading section of the toefl ibt. see i bought the toefl ibt book guide and began doing the reading section practice test but every time i do the section, i always get around 50% and ive done it over and over and i dont know whats wrong. i read the passages pretty fast but i seriously dont know what im doing wrong. I do get an idea of what the passages are about. I really dont want to go back to the IEP courses. I really need your help in some way! I dont want to fail the toefl once again. Im sick of getting 12-14/30 on the reading section. i just want to increase this score. For me seriously the questions are hard to analyze and the answer choices are really similar. I really need a guide or something related to the reading section that helps me to improve my score. Im really disappointing and dont know what to do…I do read on a variety of topics but when i answer the questions i dont know whats wrong. :'(. Ive done a few of your step 5 reading exercises and i do good on it and also on the listening part. Please i REALLY NEED YOU TO HELP ME! But as I took the test first time, I got nervous in the starting and my reading score dropped to 20. I got 23 in listening and 24 in writing. Is 93 a good score?

I’m one of your students, and I took your course for a month, and then canceled it, as I had an exam, and I was hoping I’ll do as good as I need to, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen, so I signed up for your course again a week ago. Last time, I wrote Integrated Writing Test 1 and 2, but I didn’t pay for the evaluation, so I know that Nate graded it as 21. Now I would like to actually pay for the evaluation to see where I am going wrong. Do you keep the records? Or as soon as we cancel the course the history deletes as well? Hi Michael! Thank you for all your reply, despite your busy schedule you are always prompt in answering and I would like to thank you for that. I am planning to pay for the evaluation, cuz I really think that will help me a lot, but for now I would like to focus on what I am doing wrong at this point. And as much as I can evaluate it myself, my weakness is note taking. Can u please help me in telling me how I can improve my note taking. I noticed that I am just losing my focusing in the middle of the lecture, I guess im trying to write what I just heard and by doing so I am not paying attention to the rest of the lecture. Hi Michael, as i told you before i have passed my toefl on August and got 87. Yesterday had a test again, i did good on all sections except reading section. Didint manage to finish it and was taking too long on going back to the passage and reading again and again. I need 100 or more, and i am not sure i will get it. I really need to know what should i do. I read a lot, i watch english movies, and i do read more than 200 word per minute. I dont know what to do to improve my skills on reading section. Michael, to be honest I’m not practicing Speaking section, as my score is pretty high 29/30, that’s why I am just focusing on my integrated writing right now. I read books- so that should take care of my Reading part, listen to your “listening practice tests” and writing the essays. I live in Canada and I’m married to a Canadian, and I work here as well, so I speak English all day 🙂 My biggest concern is the integrated writing. You did go over my essay yesterday, so today I’m going to work on myself, and maybe tomorrow will send you another essay to edit. I know how busy you are, but PLEASE respond as soon as you receive my essay (so far you edited 2 of my essays and you responded pretty quick, I’m just freaking out 🙂 ), as I have few days left, and this is my last chance to get into school in 2013 (I did my dental exams, applied to university, the only thing that is missing is TOEFL IBT)…Anyhow thanks again Michael, you are great!

I have been preparing for the Toefl test for months. I set a goal that I must receive more than 100 points in this essential test(writing 27 speaking 25 listening 27 and reading 28. I plan to take this test next one and a half year. My problem is that I can’t take good notes and I can’t organise well. In addition, my speaking skills are also quite bad, especially my fluency.(My pronunciation is good). The Toefl speaking section is so difficult due to its wide variety of sample answers which really confuse me. I have great difficulties accomplishing well speaking section 4 and speaking section 6. Hi Michael, I received my TOEFL score today. Just to remind that I took the test on December 7th. Unfortunately I did not get 100…:( I got 97. Which is not bad, but I needed 100. This is the breakdown. Reading 22, Listening 22, Speaking 28 (all 3 sections are marked as Good 3.5-4.0) and Writing 25 (both independent and integrated writing are marked as good 4.0-5.0). Any comments/suggestions? I`m glad that my independent writing got better thanks to You and your course, as before I was scoring 22-24 on writing task, with INTERMEDIATE on integrated writing and GOOD on independent. Congratulations on your strong score report. Most students would love to be in your shoes for sure. But there is no passing score on the TOEFL, and, as you know, different institutions have as many different requirements for the TOEFL as I have running shoes in my garage. And I’ve got a lot of shoes!
Based on your results, it looks like you will have to improve more in the reading and the listening sections. Your speaking score is 28/30, so it will be nearly impossible to do much better than that. Likewise, your writing score is strong at 25/30 pts. It may be possible to increase your writing score by a few more points, but I still think you will have to spend more time completing some reading and listening practice tests.
Use a TOEFL book if you have one, and begin taking reading and listening practice tests and then
1) Review the test, and make sure you understand which answer is correct and why.
2) Then, especially focus on your incorrect answers to figure out why the answer you chose is wrong.
Doing this type of reading and listening practice test analysis will help you to develop better test-taking strategies.
Of course, hit it hard right now with your extensive reading of 45 minutes each day while you are trying to increase your reading score. Read, read, and read as much as you can: newspapers, magazines, and longer books—anything you can get your hands on. Even keep a vocabulary journal to keep track of unfamiliar words you see. Of course, you can also use my Online TOEFL Course to increase your reading speed to 300 words per minute or more, which is always a good thing in your reading adventures. Faster readers have fewer distractions than slower readers so you will be able to more confidently complete the reading section of the test if you have a faster reading speed.
Similarly, you will need to hit it hard with practicing with listening materials. Again, spend time listening to news radio and watching news and documentary programs on television. Your whole purpose with your listening practice is to make your ears faster and faster until listening to spoken English becomes as natural as listening to you native tongue. And, as you know, it takes a lot of practice to become bilingual in your listening comprehension skills.
However, you have proved with an incredible score of 28/30 on the speaking section that you can reach near-native proficiency, which is why I think you will be able to do the same with your listening and reading proficiencies. The key here is to get really and I mean really serious with preparing for the reading and listening parts of the exam, and I suspect you will be able to slay the TOEFL monster once and for all.
Keep a good fight and stay the course!

I think I am doing doing in listening and reading, I mean not 100% but ok. After listening to ur reading stratagies, I was really impressed, I came to know where I am doing mistakes. I was really scared abt speaking and writing. I was not even trying to practice the speaking and writing b’coz I was really panic of those two sessions. I don’t go out and speak to people here. The course lasts as long as you need it—usually until you reach your TOEFL goals. I have enough lessons and practice tests to keep you busy for 4 months or so. When you do longer need the course, you simply cancel your subscription at your Pay Pal account. A lot of students like my course because they want to be able to post their speaking and writing practice tests online, and they know that someone will evaluate and comment on those practice tests. If you diligently use my course daily, you can expect about 5-10 points improvement in your TOEFL score each month that you use it.
If you do not have access to the Internet, do NOT take this course because it is fully online, so not being able to go Online 2-3 hours each day will greatly affect your learning process.

I really need your help, I’m suffering to much with this topic of toefl, and I feeling frustrated about it. Now, I’m grad student at #$%&**( University, but I got a conditional admit ion, because I got just 1 point below to the minimal requirement of the school. it is unbelievable!!. The graduated school is give time to try to improve my toefl score, that mean, that I should have a satisfactory score before to end of the spring semester (beginning of MAY). If I do not get a satisfactory score I could not continuous as student at the school.
The minimal requirement of the school are R: 19; L: 13; S: 18; W: 18, Total Score: 77. I took the toefl 3 times in the last 2 year. The following are my score results:
JUN 10, 2011 R: 21; L: 19; S: 19; W: 17, Total Score: 76.
AUG 04, 2012 R: 18; L: 15; S: 22; W: 20, Total Score: 75.
NOV 16, 2012 R: 19; L: 16; S: 19; W: 21, Total Score: 75.

Since you are asking me a rhetorical question about the TOEFL, I think you will probably get a very high score on the TOEFL iBT. Being able to read at a rhetorical level is a sure indicator that you are advancing your reading proficiency and your critical thinking.

Today I took TOEFL for the first time, I really don’t know what to expect from the exam, I didn’t find it very hard, however, the reading part kind of scared me, cause I’m not much of a reader or something.
My first essay had around 175 words, and the final one had around 312.
