“1-2-3” TOEFL Method of Study

TOEFLers,

Wherever you are and whatever you want to do, if English is not your first language and if you have academic or professional aspirations, you will need to take the TOEFL exam.  How you prepare for this exam may help or prevent you from achieving your target score and subtotal scores in the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections.  Fortunately, achieving your target overall scores may be as easy as 1-2-3.

1

The first thing you need to do is to figure out what overall score and subtotal scores you need on the TOEFL exam. Because there is no passing TOEFL score, universities and professional jobs set their own standards as to what their required overall scores and subtotal scores are. To illustrate,  if you want to clear your English proficiency pharmacy requirements for the TOEFL iBT, you will need an overall score of 93/120 along with subtotal reading, listening, speaking, and writing scores of 22, 21, 26, and 24. Or, if you want to get admitted into the Harvard Graduate School of Education,  you will need an overall score of 104/120, with reading, listening, speaking, and writing subtotals of at least 26. Find your school, determine your profession, and find out what TOEFL scores you need before you do anything else.

The second thing you need to do is to take a full-length four hour TOEFL iBT practice so that you can get an overall and subtotal reading, listening, speaking, and writing scores.  Of course, you can pay $200 to take the official TOEFL exam to get this information; however, if you are on a tight budget, you can take a practice test for as few as $35.  Taking a practice test will help you to familiarize yourself with the structure of the TOEFL iBT, it will give you a chance to practice your concentration and test-taking skills, and you will get to see how close or how far away you are from your university or subtotal requirements.

The third thing you need to do is to choose a TOEFL study plan based how much time you will need to reach your target overall and subtotal reading, listening, speaking, and writing scores. For example, if your overall TOEFL practice test score is 80/120 and if you want to score higher than 100/120, you can expect an improvement of 5-10 points of improvement for each month that you study. Therefore, to make a 20 point improvement will take 2-4 months of practice if if you are diligent and study 2-3 hours every day. To sum up, now depending on your specific TOEFL overall and subtotal scores you need, you can choose among the following TOEFL plans:
